Care Instructions
Why is it important for me to take proper care of my clothes?
Our qualities, cuts, and the functionality of our clothing are designed to bring lasting joy. We want to provide helpful tips so that your favorite LANIUS pieces can accompany you even more sustainably: They are made to be worn, cleaned, loved – and, if necessary, repaired. With good care, the lifespan of clothing is extended, and at the same time, you contribute to the protection of our resources and the environment.
How do I properly care for my clothes?
General: Always observe the care instructions on the label.
Washing:
- Low temperatures, reduced spin cycles, and a laundry bag for wool and silk are recommended.
- Wash garments with similar colors and turn them inside out to avoid discoloration, color fading, and changes.
- Close buttons and zippers to prevent damage.
- Bleach-free delicate detergents are particularly gentle on fibers.
Airing instead of Washing:
Not every garment needs to be washed immediately after wearing. Airing saves time, water, and protects the environment and material.
Storage:
- Do not hang knitwear, as it will lose its shape.
- After washing, dry flat and gently pull into shape – knitwear needs time to dry properly.
Ironing:
- Ironing restores shape and smooths roughened fibers.
- First, check if the material can be ironed and observe the temperature setting.
- For delicate natural fibers like silk or materials like elastane, Tencel™, and ECOVEROTM, place a damp cloth between the garment and the iron.
- Tip: A high-quality ironing board cover protects better than cheap boards with metal mesh.
Pilling:
Natural fibers like wool can form small knots (pilling) – a sign of the material's naturalness.
We deliberately avoid chemical finishes to maintain breathability and softness.
Carefully remove knots with a lint shaver, wool comb, or small scissors. For fine, long hairs, occasional brushing up helps.
Special Detergents:
Liquid special detergents for wool, silk, linen, or cotton dissolve better and are gentle on fibers without compromising washing performance.
Small Repairs:
- Wear and tear, such as loose buttons or open stitches, is normal.
- Step-by-step instructions for simple repairs can be found online – we are also happy to help with any questions.
Care Symbols:
- We have summarized the meanings of all care symbols for you here.
- Strictly following the care instructions significantly extends the lifespan of your favorite items.
How do I care for cotton?
Cotton is absorbent, tear-resistant, skin-friendly, durable and comfortable to wear.
* Wash dark and coloured textiles separately at max. 30 °C
* Wash special fibre blends only in the gentle programme (delicate wash)
* Iron at moderate heat (max. 150 °C)
How do I care for wool?
Wool is not very susceptible to dirt and odors, is sweat-repellent, anti-static, and hardly wrinkles.
* Gently dab small stains with a damp cloth (Pro tip: never rub!)
* Allow breaks between wearing, air regularly
* Hand wash, wool wash cycle possibly preferable to manual hand washing (only partially possible, check label; do not leave in the machine in a damp and warm state for too long). Then squeeze out in a terry towel
* Wash only with the designated wool detergent (especially gentle on the fiber)
* Store flat and dry
* Remove pills with a fabric shaver or wool comb
* Use natural moth protection (cedarwood, lavender, cade oil)
* Heavily soiled favorite items should be given to professional gentle dry cleaning
How do I care for TENCEL?
Tencel wicks away moisture excellently and has similar wearing properties to cotton.
* Wash at max. 30 °C and only use special color and delicate detergent without bleach (reduce spin speed, low temperature)
* Wash inside out (even with printed garments)
* Tencel does not have as high color fastness as cotton and is sensitive to light (do not dry in the sun)
* Iron into shape (follow care instructions)
How do I care for leather?
Leather is relatively waterproof and yet breathable, particularly dense and stretchy.
* Remove coarse dirt with a soft leather brush or a damp cloth (be very careful as this can cause irreparable damage; please never rub or scratch)
* Treat leather with an ecological impregnating agent specially developed for the type of leather before first use
* Every type of leather is different and requires appropriate care
* Bring heavily soiled favourite items for professional, gentle dry cleaning
How do I care for silk?
Silk has a special sheen, is fine and supple, and feels light on the skin. It offers high wearing comfort and is also absorbent and insulating.
* Hand wash at a low temperature
* Wash inside out with a mild silk detergent, using gentle movements in the suds
* Wash inside out at a low temperature and iron while still slightly damp (Pro tip: place a cotton cloth underneath)
* Can be ironed well with a steamer
* For severe soiling, have it professionally dry cleaned with care
How do I care for alpaca wool?
Alpaca wool is particularly dirt-resistant and breathable. It can be worn in summer and winter, is very suitable for allergy sufferers, and is soft and shiny.
* Gently dab small stains with a damp cloth (never rub)
* Allow breaks between wearing, air out
* Wool wash cycle in the washing machine only partially possible (Attention: label)
* Store flat and dry
* Remove pilling with a fabric shaver or wool comb
* Use natural moth repellent (cedar wood, lavender, cade oil)
* For heavily soiled favorite items, take them to professional gentle dry cleaning
How do I remove stains?
When it comes to stains, it's important to act immediately. That's why we've compiled the best tips for you:
RED WINE
* Mineral water or tap water
* Apply a lot of salt to the stain, carefully brush it off once the salt has absorbed the liquid, then wash
* For cashmere or silk: Dry shampoo
* For a dark shadow after treatment: Shaving foam. Then rinse out and let dry.
COFFEE
* Mineral water or warm (!) water
* For dried stains: Salt or baking powder * Gall soap can be used on light-colored and very robust items
GREASE
* First, absorb grease with paper towels, then use plenty of hot water and dish soap to wash it out
* For old stains: Gall soap (bar)
MAKE-UP
* For light, white (or dark) and robust clothing: Gall soap or baking powder
SWEAT
* Yellowish discolorations can be treated by soaking overnight in warm water with a dash of vinegar essence. After treatment, wash normally in the machine.
What does residual shrinkage mean?
For the sake of the environment, we reduce production steps to a minimum and deliberately avoid additional finishing or unnecessary rewashing.
Therefore, some materials may shrink a little after the first wash at home. This is indicated by the % information on possible residual shrinkage in the care instructions online and on the care label for each item. The information always indicates the maximum possible residual shrinkage if the care recommendations are followed.
The cut and fit are designed so that shrinkage of up to max. 7% does not affect the size, but you should pay particular attention to this information if the item is already very close-fitting or is intended to be consciously loose-fitting.
How can I make the color of my clothes last as long as possible?
In order to keep the color brilliance of your clothes for as long as possible, you should use special color and/or delicate detergents and wash at the lowest temperature and rotation speed possible. Colors wash out especially at high temperatures and when using "universal detergents," which usually contain bleach.
Our Responsibility
Viscose, Lyocell, Modal, TENCEL™, ECOVERO™ – what are they actually and what's the difference?
Viscose is a so-called regenerated cellulose fiber. For this purpose, the natural raw material cellulose, which is obtained from wood, is chemically spun into a fiber.
Lyocell and modal are other regenerated cellulose fibers based on different and in some cases more environmentally friendly manufacturing processes.
TENCEL™ is the brand name for Lyocell and Modal fibers from Lenzing AG in Austria, which has been working for decades on the most environmentally friendly manufacturing processes possible for regenerated cellulose fibers. This also includes the brand's viscose fiber, the so-called LENZING™ ECOVERO™, which is currently the "greenest" viscose on the market.

Why do we use elastane, polyester, or nylon?
We place great importance on natural and high-quality materials. At first glance, the use of chemical fibers may seem contradictory. However, it is important to note that these fibers, in small quantities, can immensely improve the comfort, longevity, and robustness of clothing. For example, jeans with only 1% elastane are much more comfortable to wear and more durable. This is our motivation for incorporating recycled elastane, polyester, and nylon in combination with our natural qualities, wherever it makes sense to do so.

Why isn't everything "certified/GOTS/organic"?
The answer lies in the diversity of our production facilities and the materials processed. Sometimes it's just a button that isn't certified, but the fabrics and production are. Nevertheless, the entire textile production chain – from cultivation to product – must be certified: If only one component, such as the button, does not meet the criteria, the entire product will not receive a GOTS certificate.
Furthermore, GOTS certification is very expensive. For some smaller production facilities, it is simply too costly to get certified, as customer demand is unfortunately still too low. We support all our suppliers in getting GOTS certified, so that as many production steps as possible can be secured.
In addition, GOTS only certifies natural fibers, so products like TENCEL™ Lyocell fibers and modal fibers are unfortunately not GOTS certifiable and are not allowed to bear the seal. However, we produce clothing made from these sustainable materials in GOTS-certified production facilities.
Basically, each of our pieces is consciously made. To make it more transparent for you which items in our collection are certified according to which criteria, we have developed icons that decode the entire textile value chain and serve as a guide. You can find these icons in our online shop under each product under the "Sustainability" section.
But why isn't everything "organic"? We have to say that on the global market, due to low demand, the proportion of certified organic materials is still very small. We are working to change this, educating, and looking for partners who support us in our vision so that we can offer our entire collection in certified organic quality in the future.
Why does LANIUS also produce in China and not only in Europe?
LANIUS has been producing in China for over twelve years – exclusively in selected facilities that value sustainability and craftsmanship under fair conditions just as much as we do. The label "Made in China" carries negative connotations, and we want to show that this prejudice cannot be generally applied to an entire country with all its production sites – because good and less good production facilities exist worldwide.
We visit our partner companies personally, and in many cases, we look back on decades of good cooperation. The selection of companies is based on our sustainability guidelines and high quality standards, as well as the fundamental vision of natural, sustainable materials and fair and equitable remuneration.
An important aspect is also environmental protection and value creation: We strive to source materials from their countries of origin and process them there. Examples include the raw materials hemp and silk that we use.

Why does LANIUS produce shoes from leather? In what way is the production of the shoes sustainable?
Sustainable shoe styles have been part of the LANIUS collection for several years. With the family-owned company WERNER, which has been producing sustainable shoes for 100 years, we have found a reliable production partner.
Leather is a natural and high-quality material that we firmly believe in. The leather for our shoes is vegetable-tanned and chrome-free in Germany, the shoes are produced under fair conditions exclusively in Europe, and all raw materials come from Germany or neighboring European countries. This keeps transport routes short and protects the environment.

Why do we still pack some of our collection in plastic bags?
Currently, 76% are packaged in recycled plastic and 24% in paper. Packaging a garment without any protective material is unfortunately not a logistical option, as it needs to reach the customer protected and in new condition.
Starting with the delivery of our S/S 21 collection, only plastic bags made from 100% recycled material will be used, which can also be recycled again if disposed of correctly. With this step, we are actively contributing to the circular economy and making an essential contribution to reducing plastic waste.
However, we are also constantly working on alternatives and are not afraid to develop and try out new possibilities. With our #NOPLASTIC initiative, we have proactively joined forces with other sustainable fashion companies and organizations and have jointly set ourselves the goal of avoiding new plastic as a packaging component.
What does GOTS stand for?
We are GOTS-certified, as are many of our products. The seal is re-awarded annually, and GOTS-certified companies like ours are subject to regular inspections based on a dual control system – consisting of on-site inspections at the company and analyses of residues in the textiles. For a garment to receive the GOTS seal, it must consist of at least 70% natural fibers of organic origin (kbA/kbT quality) and meet comprehensive social and ecological criteria in its production.
Learn more about the social and ecological standards of GOTS certification here.
What do kbA/kbT stand for?
In controlled organic farming (kbA) and controlled organic animal husbandry (kbT), the raw fibre, the material, was demonstrably produced under organic conditions that have been defined by the respective organic regulations and checked by external certification companies.
What exactly is the difference between organic cotton and conventional cotton?
There are some important differences between conventional and organic cotton cultivation. Three essential advantages of organic farming: efficient water management, no genetic engineering, no synthetic pesticides.
Due to efficient irrigation, the cultivation of organic cotton saves a lot of water. Genetically modified seeds are prohibited in organic farming, as is the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers. Instead, natural plant protection agents such as humus and plant manure are used, which neither pollute soils and groundwater nor endanger the health of farmers.

Which dyes does LANIUS use?
The type of fiber always matters for our dyeing processes. For example, it's relevant whether it's a fiber of plant origin, such as cotton or linen, or a fiber of animal origin, such as wool or silk.
We primarily use synthetic dyes because they are long-lasting and colorfast. We generally adhere to the strict guidelines of the Global Organic Textile Standard – GOTS for short. In addition, our garments are regularly inspected by our quality assurance team. Tests for harmful substance residues are an essential part of our control – carcinogenic or health-hazardous substances are out of the question for us.
Instead, our dyes are environmentally friendly and skin-friendly, and also ideal for allergy sufferers. To dye in a particularly gentle way, we have long been involved with natural dyes. In this process, the fabrics are dyed purely with pigments extracted from plants and flowers.
How does LANIUS ensure socially responsible working conditions and fair wages for employees in production?
We work exclusively with companies that comply with our sustainability guidelines and take responsibility for their employees. This includes ensuring socially responsible working conditions and paying fair wages.
We visit our production facilities in person – both announced and unannounced – to get a first-hand impression of the working conditions. We also rely on external audits, such as those by GOTS, to verify sensitive information.
We do not work with so-called subcontractors – middlemen – whose business model consists of placing orders with unknown production partners who produce goods for a fraction of the order volume – at the expense of textile workers in the factories.
How do we transport the goods?
Our goods are always transported in the most sustainable way possible, and the resulting CO₂ emissions have been fully offset since 2021 with the help of climate experts from ClimatePartner.
We discuss orders transparently and early with our suppliers, because the more time available, the more environmentally friendly we can ship our goods – by rail from China or climate-neutral by truck from the EU or Turkey.
In absolute exceptional cases, for example, in the event of significant production delays, we may have to ship individual product groups by air.
Our customers receive their collection climate-neutrally through shipping with DHL GoGreen.
